WORLD TRADE CENTER Memorial Competition - NEW YORK, USA

DESIGN CONCEPT FOR THE MEMORIAL AT THE WORLD TRADE CENTER SITE WAS CONCEIVED FROM THE DEEPEST INNER FEELINGS AND MEANING OF THE PLACE AFTER SEPTEMBER 11 TRAGEDY. LIKE MANY TIMES IN OUR HISTORY WE AS PEOPLE HAVE SHOWN OUR STRENGTH AND RESILIENCE TO OVERCOME EVEN THE DARKEST MOMENTS AS THOSE THAT HAS HAPPENED ON SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 AND FEBRUARY 26, 1993. THE PROGRAM ELEMENTS OF THE MEMORIAL ARE DEFINED BY THE FOOTPRINTS OF THE ORIGINAL WORLD TRADE CENTER TOWERS AND NEW PHYSICAL SPACES FOR QUIET VISITATION AND CONTEMPLATION.

THE FOCAL POINT OF THE MEMORIAL SITE IS A STEEL AND GLASS STRUCTURE CALLED "HEROES WINGS" AS A TRIBUTE TO THOSE WHO HAVE SACRIFICED THEIR LIVES TO SAVE OTHERS. THE WINGS ARE SOLID ON THE TOP BUT COMPLETELY TRANSPARENT UNDERNEATH "FLYING" ABOVE SACRED GROUND. THE WINGS ARE SYMBOLICALLY EMBRACING THE ORIGINAL TWIN TOWERS FOOTPRINTS AND RISING TOWARDS THE SKY AS A SIGN OF ENDURING LIFE AND FREEDOM.
